For nurse educators
Make reasoning visible.
A shared framework for thoughtful classroom conversations.

Start with a question
Invite learners to describe the connections they see. GUARD gives the group five areas to return to while leaving room for different interpretations.
Ask learners which area a detail belongs in, then ask why. More than one placement can support a useful discussion.
Facilitate a conversation
- 1

Look together.
Give learners time to read the situation before discussing it.
- 2

Make connections.
Ask which details stand out and how they relate to the GUARD areas.
- 3

Explain the reasoning.
Invite learners to describe a concern, a possible action, and what could change their mind.
- 4

Look again.
Introduce a change in the situation and revisit the first interpretation.
- 5

Reflect.
Ask where their thinking changed direction, or why they kept it the same.
After step 4, the discussion may return to step 2 to reconsider.
The aim is to make thinking visible. GUARD does not require every area to be filled, and placements are not scored.
Classroom case tools
In developmentA dedicated presenter view and printable classroom worksheet are still in development. The first case will be available after its release review is complete.
Prompts for a classroom discussion
Give a fact a purpose.
A medication has an expected effect.
What outcome matters for this person, and what would tell you it is being reached?
Look for what changes it.
A new finding is present.
What could this mean in this person’s circumstances, and what concern does it raise?
Leave room to change.
The situation is different now.
Does your earlier response still fit? Explain what supports it and what would make you reconsider.
